Valentine's Day is for Suckers? | A Make or Break Holiday

Will you be mine? Such few words carry so much weight. Those words usually come about on Valentine's Day, a day with a lot of mixed emotions. There are usually multiple groups on the matter, those whom having no valentine has been a yearly thing, those in relationships who of course have no problem finding one, those singles who usually have valentines and others. Valentine's Day has become pretty popular since its meaning changed from back in the 5th century to remember the death of a martyr. It's become pretty Americanized since then and now represents a special day we show extra special love to that extra special someone. Of course you shouldn't need one day specifically to show someone you care, but its become tradition that this be a special day that maybe you tell that person you like them, or you take the next step with someone you're committed to. Whatever the reason may be, Valentine's Day has become a big deal and a huge part of our lives.

To those who despise or hate Valentine's Day, I feel your pain. Should Valentine's Day be a day that people feel bad if they don't have someone? Absolutely not! No one says you have to have someone to prove to others you aren't alone. Granted some people feel left out when they aren't involved in the holiday, but you always have to remember, its just one day. You can take the day to treat yourself if you want, rest, enjoy the peace of not having so many people around, show love to your family, go out with friends, or whatever you'd like to do to take your mind off the festivities. None of the stuff I say however condones judging other people who are celebrating or speaking badly about them. They're enjoying themselves and it shouldn't be considered a bad thing if you choose not to. The day will be over before you know it and things will be back to "normal". You'll find that special someone some day soon. Don't rush it because of a day that is hyped up by other people. There are 364 and sometimes 365 other days to find someone and be happy.

Next, to those who aren't completely against Valentine's Day, there are two things to remember. One, you should not be upset if your significant other doesn't go all out. Remember, showing someone you care isn't something that you do in just one day. It's something you remind the other person of throughout the year. There's birthdays, anniversaries, and other holidays to do so. Second, be mindful of the friends you have that may not be as lucky as you are. You should definitely enjoy the day as much as you want, but just remember not to boast about it to the wrong people or remind your friends that they may not have a special someone in their life. Even though it is only a day, that's something they may have on their mind everyday. Also, try to talk to them and remind them that it's not the end of the world. Again, Valentine's Day lasts 24 hours and then its back to your life. Otherwise, enjoy your special day!

Overall, Valentine's Day isn't a day to lose your head over. It's nice to be treated well, and be appreciated, but don't limit it to just one day, and don't let it be expressed by material things alone. Don't feel bad if you're alone that day. Think of it as another day. Don't let the hype get to you. If you're not alone, let it be a day to remember how lucky you are to not be.
